The more you (figuratively 'you') learn about Nietzsche, the more of a tragic and individual figure he becomes. The two primary 'schools' around him, that being the stereotypes of nihilistic teenagers and National Socialists, have done him a severe disservice.

This was a fantastic series! Seeing the photos chronologically leads to all sorts of speculation. He's actually quite handsome for a while, especially without a mustache. But 1875 seems to be the year he erased his mouth, one of the outstanding features of any face. From that moment on, he is for me suspect--of being either highly insecure, aesthetically misguided, or concealing his identity. It's no wonder Lou Andreas-Salomé turned him down. Imagine kissing a mouth that isn't there! How did he eat? Did he lift the bush with one hand and shove a forkful into his mouth with the other? I rather suspect he was disguising himself, hiding his identity from Wagnerianers who might have recognized him and assaulted him for a recent attack on their idol.

Matt Damon would play him in a film I reckon. That's my scholarly take haha. Great post Neil.

Ha, yes I can see that. I think the moustache would do most of the work in the later years of the biopic
